Phil Murray
Phil Murray’s lifetime love of skeet comes to him naturally. His father was a skeet shooter in the 1930-40s and introduced Phil to registered targets so they could shoot together. But to Phil it was not just a casual pastime. He took the game seriously and had the legendary D. Lee Braun for his coach.
First selected to an All-American Team in 1966 on the Junior First Team, Phil has since been named to a total of 21 teams, including 1995 Open Honorable Mention.
Phil’s early wins were on the west coast as California State .410 champ in 1971, 1973, and 1974 and California State HOA champ from 1973-’75. His Zone 7 accomplishments include HOA champ and Champ of Champs in 1976.
World championships started rolling in during the 1973 shoot when he placed third in the Champ of Champ event. In 1982 Phil shot the first of his three 400x400s in preparation for the 1983 World Shoot where he fired a 550×550 and 650×650 to claim the HAA uncontested and the HOA championship following a shoot-off with William Rodgers. That same year he was involved in the longest shoot-off in the history of skeet with Wayne Mayes for the 12-gauge event. It went 46 rounds before Phil dropped a target, and Mayes walked away with the title. Phil has made it to that shoot-off field for the World 12-gauge ten times with perfect 250x250s.
In 1994 Phil added another major championship to his belt as the Mini-World 12-gauge champion.
Phil has had .9900 plus high overall averages five different times and was the first shooter to have a .99 HOA in consecutive years using a four-barrel set the first year, and a tube set the second. He has won numerous championships at major shoots across the country including the Western Open, Great Eastern, Kentucky Bluegrass and U.S. Open.
Skeet is more than a sport to Phil, it has become his livelihood. Phil currently worked for Kolar Arms, Beretta, and White Flyer and once worked for NSSA as the editor for Skeet Shooting Review.
