Betty Ragland
Betty Ragland was introduced to skeet shooting by her husband, Alphonso. She immediately took to the sport and within a very short time was named an All American.
In the 1950s, Betty and her husband competed in shoots throughout the United States. Betty, at one time, rivaled Caola Mandel as the top lady shooter. In 1955, she was Lady HOA at the World Championships shooting a 522×550, along with Lady 28-gauge Champion, lady .410-bore champion, and Huband / Wife Champion with Alphonso in the 12-gauge. She was the Texas Ladies HOA Champion in 1954, 1956, 1957, and 1958. In 1958, in fact, she won the Ladies 12, 20, 28, .410, and HOA at the Texas State Championships.
Betty was one of skeet’s top lady shooters when she was severely injured in a car accident that killed her husband on September 15, 1958. At the time, Mr. Ragland was the NSSA Director and Executive Committeeman. Betty sustained permanent brain damage in the accident that ended her short, but distinguished skeet shooting career.
