Carroll Bobo - Buck Stark Award
Carroll has had a hand in furthering the game of skeet since the moment he
switched to the sport from trapshooting in 1966. He began as a member of the
shoot management team at the Tyler Gun Club and soon afterward the Dallas
Gun Club, He was a fixture managing the scoreboard and working registration
and he also added refinements to the process including the squadding rotation
system that is still in use, today.
Carroll became the Office Manager for the NSSA in 1970. During that time, he
managed the Texas Skeet Championships from 1971 – 1978 in Dallas, Waco,
and San Antonio. He also ran the World Championships during that period in
Rochester, Savannah, and San Antonio. In 1973 Carroll was a principal in the move of the NSSA from Dallas to San Antonio. Once in San Antonio, he led the
effort to hire and train the new headquarters staff.
In 1976 he was appointed the NSSA Executive Director.
During that time, he
negotiated with computer vendors to automate systems at NSSA Headquarters.
The effort included managing programmers to set up databases, club shoot
registration, and results input. Additionally, he coordinated programing to
automate the World Shoot including registration, squadding, scoring and
scoreboard. The system that was created was tested at the Texas State in 1976
in San Antonio.
Prior to the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Carroll worked with both the Nationals
Rifle Association (NRA) and the International Shooting Union (ISU) to allow the
NSSA to have a larger role in the game of Olympic Skeet. Results of the effort
included have a mini-training center set-up on the shooting complex grounds.
Our Olympian, Brad Simmons had a dedicated field established and was
furnished targets by white Flyer and shotshells from Winchester, to further his
training efforts. Efforts culminated in Carroll and Hollis Boss, the then NSSA
President, attending the 1976 Olympics.
