Mike Schmitt - Buck Stark Award
Mike grew up and attended school in Azle, Texas. After graduating from Azle High School in 1973, he married his high school sweetheart Sharron. They have one son, Chris and daughter-in-law Heather and three grandchildren, Paden, Addison and Jackson. Mike spent most of his working career in the Aerospace Industry and earned his MBA while working at Lockheed Martin. He worked in various management positions in production on the F-16, F-22 and F-35 programs and after 36 years of service, retired in 2014.
Mike’s skeet shooting career has spanned more than 45 years. His first taste of clay target shooting occurred in the small community of-Snook, Texas where he shot his first clays thrown from a handset at the age of 12. A few years later, he worked as a trap boy at the Fort Worth Winchester Gun Club. His first registered targets were shot in the 28 ga. using a high standard pump gun. He distinctly remembers that Al Topham pulled his first registered targets. The following year, Mike shot a few tournaments after purchasing a 3 barrel Winchester 101 and a Remington 1100 for the 12 ga. In 1972, Mike was invited to shoot with a group of Texas shooters at the World Shoot in Rochester, New York. He claims he was a bit nervous as this group consisted of some well-known All American skeet shooters (Brad Simmons, Ben Byrom, Jackie Ramsey & Robert Paxton). At the world that year, Mike broke his first 100 straight ever, in the 28 ga. The sweetest victory of all was winning the 12 ga. Open 5-man team championship after defeating the Massachusetts Minute Men in a shoot-off. The 5-man team from Texas was nicknamed “Texas Whizkids” by the famous Sports Afield journalist/writer Jimmy Robinson.
Since then, Mike has shot more than 160,000 registered targets, attended 22 World shoots, many State and statewide shoots. Some of the honors he has received include 8 All American Teams, 14 State Teams. He was the 2012 World HOA AA Champ in 2012 and Mini-World HOA AA Champ in 2010. Mike’s involvement in skeet goes much farther as he has served as TSSA Director, VP/Pres Elect (State Shoot Chairman), President, Immediate & Past President. He has served as a NSSA Referee for 2 years and worked many shoots including the State Shoot in Texas. Mike is currently signed up for a second tour of duty as skeet chairman at Fort Worth Trap & Skeet Club and is on the Board of Directors as well. Mike has played an integral part of establishing and continuously supporting League Shooting at his club. He has served as President for Fort Worth Trap & Skeet Leagues for 10 years and been a focal point for introducing and coaching many new shooters that participated in the Leagues. As a long-standing member of Fort Worth Trap & Skeet Club, he has donated many hours of labor from rebuilding and repairing skeet & trap houses, organizing shooting events, to pulling targets for the several youth organizations. His love for the game is very sincere and he is dedicated to giving back to the game.
